Southside Massage Therapy & Wellness offers a variety of treatment options to help you on the path to recovery & wellness. Whether you have been in a car accident, injured at work, suffer from neck, back or shoulder pain, headaches, migraines or just want a good massage, we will tailor your treatment to find the quickest way to get you out of pain and give you relief. Often combining different techniques can be very beneficial and therapeutic.
We specialize in advanced massage and manual therapy treatment, including strength training, stretching, exercise therapy and ergonomic advice to help correct muscle imbalances and weakness.
Deep Tissue Massage:
Deep tissue massage typically works deeper into the muscle fibers than a relaxation massage. The main purpose and benefits are:
- Release stubborn trigger points that can send a pain signal back to the central nervous system causing referred pain.
- The ability to release adhesions and knots that develop at muscle attachment sites that keep muscles short and tight.
- The ability to work deeper layers of muscle.
Deep Tissue work uses more pressure than a typical massage and frequently finds more tender points that need to be released, however the pressure should be within the person’s pain threshold.
We take special care when treating expectant mothers because they have special needs. After the first trimester, due to the growth of the baby, massage therapy has to be done with the mother lying on her side to protect the baby and for the comfort of the mother. When placing the mother on her back it is important to relieve pressure on the major vein that returns blood back to the heart.
Massage therapy can be very effective in relieving the muscular imbalances that cause pain in the low back, neck, and increases general overall well being. Instruction is also given on how to do simple exercises to help keep you out of pain and feeling better.
Cranial Sacral Therapy:
Developed by Dr. John Sutherland, Cranial Sacral Therapy treats the dural membrane that surrounds your spinal cord and nerves that exit your spinal cord. This membrane attaches at your sacrum, upper neck, base of the skull and at different points of your cranium. Inside this membrane is cerebral spinal fluid which pulses, like your heart, in a rhythmic motion. This motion can be felt in the cranial bones, sacrum and various other areas.
Injuries to the head, pelvis, or any tension in the dural tube can cause restrictions in the cranial sacral system causing various symptoms such as:
- Sacro-Iliac Joint/Hip Pain
- Low Back
- Neck Pain
- Eye Strain
- Digestion Problems from Vagus Nerve Impingement
A Cranial Sacral treatment is very safe, gentle and balancing and can be combined easily with other types of treatment.
Positional Release Therapy
Muscles relax and contract via a signal between the nerve fibers of the muscle and the central nervous system. Sometimes due to bad posture or injury to a muscle this signal gets confused and excited. This causes the electrical signal in the muscle to be firing even when the muscle is in a relaxed position. This causes muscle spasm, tightness and pain. By identifying tender points in the muscle, the body is gently placed in a position of comfort, finding the position that turns off the tender point. This is held for 60-90 seconds. This allows the electrical signal in the muscle to reset itself, causing the muscle to relax and be down regulated.
Our bodies are a complex energy system. Life force energy flows through and around us. The Chinese call it “chi”, Japanese call it “ki” and the sages of India call it “prana.” Western science is finally realizing the existence of chi. Exercises like Qi Gong, Tai Chi and Yoga all work on this principle of cleansing and raising life energy. This energy can also be transferred from one person to another in a process called Reiki Therapy.
A Reiki Practitioner will gently place his or her hands on various areas of your body (always respecting your privacy) and using different techniques, will send energy to areas that may be in pain or in need of balance. Reiki is very effective for symptoms that are a result of energy depletion.
